Jenny M. Wilson, General Manager at Urban Greens

Welcome new GM Jenny Wilson!

Urban Greens Co-op Market welcomes Jenny Wilson as our new General Manager!

Urban Greens’ Board of Directors announced the appointment of Jenny M. Wilson as its new General Manager. She started in mid-January marking the new year with an important milestone in the co-op’s continued growth and commitment to community-centered grocery retail.

It’s Women’s History Month, and we are sure Jenny’s here to make history at PVD’s favorite food co-op.

We decided to ask Jenny a few questions of our own, now that she’s started working and getting settled in her new city. Let’s get to know her together.

What accomplishments are you most proud of in your career so far? (pre-Urban Greens)

I have had the privilege of working with the most incredible people over the years. My proudest accomplishments would be any positive impact I have had on any of them. I would say the young people who worked at my restaurant in the mountains of Georgia over the 17 years I was in business, are among the most amazing people I’ve known. The retired people who chose to spend their time working at my restaurant, made me so proud that they’d give me their time. When I’ve worked other places, I’ve enjoyed investing in people where I see something special in a person that others might have missed. My accomplishments have been bonding with people by giving them a chance to shine and feel the pride that comes with their recognition.

Do you have a favorite of the 7 Co-op Principles? Which one? How do you plan to uphold it?

1. Voluntary & Open Membership open to all without discrimination. I want EVERYONE to feel welcome and enjoy shopping with us at Urban Greens! My passion is delicious nurturing food and I think it is imperative that all who come in the front door have access to food that feeds their body and soul. I want to further develop how a CO-OP is more than a place to buy food. It is also an interactive community asset for all to share that passion of food beyond the walls of the store with our neighbors. The best way to do that starts by everyone know they are welcome, and provide them with our quality groceries every day!

2. Concern for the Community – I have spent so much of my free time working with community organizations that it has always been important to me to be involved and give back in whatever way I can. I was told once that you shouldn’t go out looking to have a big impact on the world, you should strive to have a big impact on the people around you.

What is your soul animal?

I love animals! I speak to all the dogs I meet. But I would say elephants! They have the ability to overcome challenges, have great memories, and are immensely loyal. I need to adopt the level of patience that elephants possess. I relate to their commitment of family bonds. They are large and goofy animals. I just love them.

How are you spending time out of the store? January can be a challenging time to move here (or anywhere). Winter is my favorite season, so this is perfect! My husband and I have been exploring the neighborhoods, downtown, but mostly eating at great restaurants. We are looking forward to visiting museums and Roger Williams botanical center.

What does a typical day look like when you’re at the store? I have only been here a short time so my typical day isn’t set yet. I look at what’s going on in each area of the store. I walk each department with someone from that department to exchange ideas. I’m very excited to jump into the many aspects of daily operations, as well as community outreach, getting to know our members, neighbors, and guests in the store. Please, when you’re in the store say “Hi”. I look forward to meeting everyone.

We know you’ve moved a bunch, what was your favorite city to live in before?

I have loved different things about all the places I’ve lived. My favorite thing about most places is being close to my family. I loved my home in the mountains of Georgia. Most of my family was nearby and we have great friends there. I enjoyed Richmond, VA because I was closer to my brother and his family (my youngest niece and nephew), my oldest nephew and my sister-in-law and her family. Also, Richmond, like Providence, had great neighborhood restaurants, just not as many.

It may be too early, but so far, how do you feel about RI?

When we first visited Providence, we were impressed with how vibrant and lively downtown was on a weekend. We really liked our road trip to Providence and now that we are here, there’s more exploring.

What was the deciding factor to take this job now, at this point in your life?

Life is an adventure. Discovery has always been a part of my life. My new career with Urban Greens is a path I believe will enrich my life as well as contribute to Urban Greens success as a community anchor. I am so excited to have my family come visit Providence and enjoy my new adventure with me!

What helped you decide to take residence in the West End?

We found a temporary place in the West End neighborhood and have enjoyed it. The West End has great proximity to work, the fun nearby restaurants, and friendly folks we’ve met. I’m so looking forward to settling in here and making it my home.

Thanks Jenny! We welcome you and Mr. Wilson to your new home!
